How to Prepare for Accounting and Finance Interviews

Strong accounting and finance interview answers begin before the interview. Use this preparation guide to research the employer, organize relevant examples, refresh technical knowledge, and communicate your value clearly.

1. Understand the position

Read the job description carefully and identify the five most important responsibilities. Highlight required systems, reporting responsibilities, deadlines, stakeholders, and technical skills. Prepare one example demonstrating your experience with each major requirement.

2. Research the organization

Review the company’s business model, products or services, locations, leadership, customers, recent developments, and industry. Understand how the finance function supports the organization. For public companies, review recent filings and investor information when relevant.

3. Prepare your professional introduction

Create a 60- to 90-second response to “Tell me about yourself.” Explain your current expertise, the progression of your experience, two or three relevant strengths, and why this opportunity is a logical next step. Keep the answer focused on professional value.

4. Build six achievement stories

Prepare examples covering:

  • A difficult reconciliation, close, audit, or reporting deadline.
  • A process improvement or automation initiative.
  • A financial error, risk, or control issue you identified.
  • A disagreement or challenging stakeholder relationship.
  • A time you prioritized competing deadlines.
  • A measurable business result you helped deliver.

Use a clear situation, action, and result structure. Specify what you personally did and quantify the outcome when possible.

5. Refresh technical knowledge

Review the technical subjects most relevant to the role. These may include journal entries, financial statements, reconciliations, revenue recognition, accruals, variance analysis, forecasting, cash flow, internal controls, audit support, Excel, ERP systems, or industry-specific accounting.

Use the Complete Accounting Interview Guide, common accounting interview questions, and month-end close interview questions for focused practice.

6. Prepare thoughtful questions

  • What results should the person in this role deliver during the first six months?
  • What are the most important challenges facing the accounting or finance team?
  • How is success measured?
  • Which systems and reporting tools does the team use?
  • How does this role work with operations and leadership?
  • Why is the position available?

7. Complete final interview preparation

Confirm the time, location, interviewer names, travel plan, technology, and required materials. Review your resume, prepare professional attire, test virtual-interview equipment, and arrive or join early.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I prepare?

A focused preparation session can materially improve an interview. More complex, technical, or leadership roles may require several sessions to research the organization and prepare relevant examples.

Should I memorize answers?

No. Memorize the key facts and structure of your examples, but speak naturally. Over-rehearsed answers can sound disconnected from the question.

How should I answer a question when I do not know?

Be honest, explain the related knowledge you do have, describe how you would find the answer, and avoid inventing technical information.
