Introduction

Smile Solutions, "Melbourne's Home of Dentistry"™, is located in the magnificent Manchester Unity Building in the heart of Melbourne's CBD. We occupy four entire levels, plus the tower, all of which are of great significance within the art deco movement and Australia's national architectural heritage.

We are a multidisciplinary practice, home to 60 practitioners, 20 of which are board registered specialists in the fields of oral surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics.



Description

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join our team in a key part-time capacity (3 days per week).

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a high-impact role with genuine influence over the financial and commercial direction of the business. You will work closely with leadership to provide clarity, insight, and strategic guidance, while ensuring strong financial governance and operational excellence.

This role is ideally suited to someone looking for a flexible, senior opportunity where they can contribute meaningfully without the demands of a full-time position.

 

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Lead the monthly financial close process and deliver timely, accurate reporting
  • Prepare and oversee annual financial statements
  • Provide meaningful financial insights and analysis to support business decisions
  • Partner with the Managing Director on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning
  • Oversee cash flow, treasury, and financial performance

Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee BAS, Payroll Tax, and Superannuation obligations
  • Maintain and strengthen financial controls, policies, and procedures
  • Liaise with external accountants and advisors

Commercial & Strategic Contribution

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Managing Director
  • Support key business initiatives and growth opportunities
  • Identify efficiencies and drive continuous improvement across financial processes
  • Contribute to broader operational and commercial decision-making

Systems & Process Ownership

  • Maintain integrity of financial systems and chart of accounts
  • Act as the key point of contact for accounting systems and process improvements

Team Leadership

  • Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to the finance function
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment

 

About You

  • CA/CPA qualified (or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role
  • Strong technical accounting expertise with a commercial mindset
  • Confident working directly with senior stakeholders
  • Advanced Excel and financial modelling capability
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting systems
  • A hands-on, proactive approach with strong attention to detail
  • A natural communicator who can simplify complex financial information
  • Someone who values flexibility but still wants to make a meaningful impact
